Our Story

Baking where Alta California began.

Alta lives inside the Cooper-Molera Adobe — a two-and-a-half-acre National Historic Landmark in downtown Monterey, and once the social and commercial hub of Mexican Alta California. In the spirit of the old Pioneer Bakery, we've filled its historic walls with the smell of fresh bread once again.

Chef Ben Spungin and head baker Matt Somerville — formerly of the famed Big Sur Bakery — lead a kitchen that treats a morning croissant with the same care as a plated dish.
